It was an opportunity to be a part of something bigger than myself.
Devin Gould, Sedgman
Devin Gould in a structural engineer at our Silver Partner Sedgman who has volunteered at our one-day events for high school students. We asked him about why he chose to donate his time, and why his company supports the Power of Engineering.
Can you tell us about yourself?
Currently I am employed at Sedgman, a member of CIMIC Group, as a structural engineer, which pretty much means I specialise in anything that involves the design of steel and/or concrete in the mining sector. Sedgman is a leading provider of minerals processing and associated infrastructure solutions to the global resource industry. Sedgman values safety above all else while still having a heavy focus on sustainability, quality assurance, diversity, and social inclusion. Sedgman supports Power of Engineering so they can help shape a diverse engineering workforce through practical and creative experiences throughout the community.
WHY did you volunteer to be involved in an event for Power of Engineering?
I decided to volunteer for this event not only for the benefit it has on the development of my professional skills, but the chance to connect with like-minded people in the real world to make a difference within the engineering community. Power of Engineering has given me the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than myself, to utilise the skills and knowledge I have gained throughout my career to help develop, inspire, and empower the future generation of engineers.
WHY is it important for school students to meet real-life engineers?
I believe giving students the chance to engage with working engineers can be hugely beneficial, not only for future networking but to provide an opportunity to ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be an engineer, to enable them to make educated decisions about their future careers.
WHY is it important for students to see what real engineering companies do?
Having insight into the kinds of expectations engineering companies have of their engineers can help prepare students for their future careers. It is also interesting for students to see the type of work we do and the sorts of jobs they could eventually get to work on.
WHY would you recommend volunteering with Power of Engineering to others?
The experience of volunteering for Power of Engineering has given me insight to how engaging students earlier in their schooling can influence them to potentially have a career in engineering. It felt good to be able to give back to the community through Power of Engineering to show the younger generation why I love what I do and hopefully encourage them to pursue a career in engineering.
